Buying guide
Lock box vs compartment
Steel lock boxes are more secure. Molded compartments are cheaper and lighter.
Cubby cover
If you just want to lock the factory cubbies, a Tuffy cover is the simplest option.
Common fitment problems owners report
- Double Cab storage ordered for Access Cabs
- Boxes rattling without the included pads
- Rear seat not latching fully if the box isn't seated
Cab style decides whether this works at all
Double Cab. A usable void under the rear bench, with a cushion that flips up on most trims. This is the configuration under-seat boxes are made for.
Access Cab. Very little usable space under the small jump seats. Most under-seat products don't fit, and the ones that claim to are usually much smaller. Behind-the-seat storage is the more realistic option here.
Before ordering, flip your rear cushion up and measure:
- Width between the seat mounts
- Depth front to back
- Height to the underside of the raised cushion
That last number is the one that catches people, because a box that fits the floor may stop the cushion latching back down.
What belongs under there
The under-seat space is for things you want in the cab, dry, out of sight, and only occasionally:
- Recovery straps and shackles
- Jumper cables or a jump pack
- A tool roll or socket set
- Tyre inflator and gauge
- First-aid kit and work gloves
What doesn't belong: anything you need while driving (console), and anything muddy (bed box).
Lockable or open
Lockable boxes keep tools out of sight in a truck parked at a trailhead or job site. Worth it if the contents have resale value.
Open bins and trays are cheaper, lighter and easier to pull out. Fine for straps and soft gear.
Either way, check the lid opens with the rear cushion down if you want access without folding the seat.
Things to confirm
- Does the box stop the rear cushion latching when closed? The most common complaint
- Does it interfere with the rear seatbelt buckles or the lower child seat anchors
- Is it secured? An unsecured box in a cab is a projectile in a hard stop. Most come with straps or brackets, and they're worth using
- On a Double Cab with the flip-up cushion, note whether the cover or box has to come out to use the seat normally
The alternative
If you mainly want somewhere for tools and you have a bed, a swing-case under the bed rail or a bulkhead chest box holds far more and keeps the cab clear. On a short bed, a swing-case is particularly appealing because it costs almost no bed space.
Under-seat storage wins when you specifically want the contents dry, warm and theft-proof — which on a Tacoma usually means recovery gear and tools you'd rather not leave in an open bed.
FAQ
Does under-seat storage fit the Tacoma Access Cab? Not these products. They're Double Cab-specific.
Do 2016–2023 Tacoma under-seat boxes fit a 2024? No. The 4th-gen rear seat is new.
Is the Tuffy cubby cover worth it? If you keep tools or valuables in the factory cubbies, yes — it adds a locking lid.
Do I lose legroom with under-seat storage? No legroom, but the area under the seat is no longer usable for loose items.
Does under-seat storage fit an Access Cab Tacoma? Mostly not. The space under the jump seats is too small for standard boxes; behind-the-seat storage is the realistic option.
Can I still fold the rear seat with a box fitted? With a correctly sized box, yes. Measure the height to the raised cushion first.
Should I secure the box? Yes. Use the supplied straps or brackets — an unsecured box becomes a projectile in a hard stop.
