F-150 Bench Seat vs Bucket Seats: Which Covers and Liners Fit? (2021+)

If your 2021+ F-150 has a fold-down middle seat between the front seats, you have a 40/20/40 bench; if it has a fixed center console with a shifter or storage, you have bucket seats. Seat covers, front floor liners and console organizers are all sold separately for each layout, and a bench-seat part won't fit a bucket-seat truck.
Short answer: look between the front seats. A fold-down middle seat means a 40/20/40 bench. A fixed center console means bucket seats. That one detail changes your seat covers, front floor liners and console accessories.
How to identify your seats
| You see… | You have |
|---|---|
| A middle seat back that folds down into an armrest | 40/20/40 front bench |
| A full-length console with storage and cupholders | Bucket seats |
| Column shifter | Usually a bench (check) |
| Console shifter or dial | Usually buckets |
What changes
| Accessory | Bench | Bucket |
|---|---|---|
| Front seat covers | 40/20/40 version | Bucket version |
| Front floor liner | Needs center coverage (over-the-hump) | Two separate footwells |
| Console organizer | Fits the fold-down console | Fits the fixed console |
| Rear seat covers | Depends on rear armrest, not front seats | Same |
Our seat covers guide and floor liners guide sort every pick by layout.
The rear seat: armrest or not
SuperCrew rear seats come with or without a fold-down armrest. Covercraft sells separate rear covers for each. Fold the middle section down — if it becomes an armrest with cupholders, you have the armrest version.
Other details to check
- Floor: carpet or vinyl (many XL trucks have vinyl)
- Rear storage: some trucks have a lockable under-seat storage box
- Ventilated seats: choose breathable covers
Tell them apart in ten seconds
Fold the middle of your front row down.
- It becomes a seat or an armrest with cupholders, and there's a middle seatbelt buckle → 40/20/40 bench
- There's a fixed console with a lift-up lid between two separate seats, no middle belt → buckets
The numbers describe how the seat divides across its width: 40% driver, 20% middle, 40% passenger.
Why the covers can't swap
A bench cover is a three-piece set. The middle panel has:
- A cutout for the fold-down armrest so the armrest still deploys
- A slot for the middle lap belt
- Often a separate middle headrest piece
A bucket set has none of that, and two bucket covers side by side leave the middle section of a bench bare. Going the other way, the bench cover's middle panel has nowhere to sit on a truck with a console.
The sub-variants listings skip
Even within "bench", two details change the cover:
Does the middle fold into a seat or into an armrest? Some F-150 benches have a flat usable middle seat with a headrest; others fold into a console-style armrest with a lid and cupholders. Covers are cut differently for each, and a listing that only says "40/20/40" hasn't told you which.
Is there a middle headrest? If yes, you need a third headrest piece. Listings usually say "with/without middle headrest" and it's the detail most buyers skim past.
What else changes with the configuration
| Bench | Buckets | |
|---|---|---|
| Front seat covers | Three-piece with armrest cutout | Two bucket covers + optional console cover |
| Console organiser | Shallow armrest bin tray | Deep console box insert |
| Cupholder inserts | Armrest holders | Console holders |
| Seat gap filler | Different geometry | Standard two-gap setup |
Features that cut across both
Whichever configuration you have, check these on your own seats before buying:
- Side airbag tag on the outer seatback. If it's there, the cover must state side airbag compatibility — it needs a breakaway seam over the seat's own tear seam
- Ventilated seats need a perforated cover, or the ventilation simply stops working
- Heated seats work through thin covers; thick neoprene dulls the effect noticeably
- Power seat switch panel on the outer edge of the base needs an opening in the cover
- Max Recline seats have a different base shape and more recline travel than standard seats
What to search for in the listing
Look for your exact configuration in the title or first bullet: "40/20/40", "bench", "bucket", "with console", "w/ fold-down armrest", "with middle headrest". A listing that says only "fits 2021+ F-150 front seats" hasn't accounted for any of the above, which usually means it was measured on one configuration.
FAQ
How do I know if my F-150 has a bench seat? If there's a middle seat you can fold down between the front seats, it's a 40/20/40 bench.
Do bench seat covers fit bucket seats? No. They're cut for different seat shapes.
Do I need different floor liners for a bench seat? The front liner usually differs because bench trucks have an open center floor.
Does the rear seat armrest matter for seat covers? Yes. Rear covers are sold with and without the armrest opening.
What does 40/20/40 mean on an F-150 bench? The proportional width of the three sections across the seat: 40% driver, 20% middle, 40% passenger.
Can I use two bucket covers on a bench seat? No. The middle 20% section stays uncovered, and the armrest and belt cutouts are missing.
Does a bench seat change which console organiser I need? Yes. The bench's fold-down armrest bin is far shallower than the bucket console box.
